Dear UH Mānoa Music Education Major,
“Seize the day” seems like a great motivating catch phrase. College becomes one of those special times when we get to seize experiences that will forever change our lives. There are many organizations or class options to seize, and in the music department you may hear the words CMENC tossed around. Is this club for me? Is this a group worth my time? Hopefully this introductory letter will help answer those questions. In college I felt myself trying to reinvent the wheel for some of my musical and educational experiences. I found myself confused with what was the best way to teach private lessons, why certain books were better than others, or why some students picked things up quicker. I decided to join the 130,000+ other music educators as part of MENC: The National Association for Music Education. As a result, I met other students and teachers, allowing me to share both ideas and frustrations. I found out I was not alone in my thoughts, and I seized the chance to be part of a great professional organization and family. At UH, our CMENC chapter is not about carrying a membership card. MENC is all about action, and our collegiate chapter has already been commended for our hard work (from last year’s petition drive). MENC provides the support and resources to keep you up-to-date with events, conferences, and trends in music education. Sometimes Oahu, or outer islands, begins to feel remote. MENC members receive monthly magazines with links to resources on curriculum, lesson plans, and teaching techniques. If you are struggling on how to deal with parents, there are a plethora of resources. A question on assessment for your methods course will direct you to perhaps the National Standards for Music Education that MENC helped develop. Searching the Internet or library are great options, but MENC resources put everything together in one package. Collegiate MENC members are also able to view NewsLink, a monthly newsletter exclusively for college music education students. Sometimes it seems like there is an endless stream of resources through MENC. These can help lead to future employment, as well as establishing excellent professional and personal relationships to last a lifetime. The question now centers on your involvement to stand on the side or to jump in the pool of our collegiate chapter. This is a group making a difference through active music making. Please consult our calendar, bulletin board, or web page for future meetings. Your future is now; seize the chance to make a change, get involved.
